Dirty Water
Jesus, our Lord and Savior, continually refers to Himself as our Living Water. But in a world where our dirty water from yesterday just gets recycled and pumped back into our homes, after being cleaned to a certain degree, how do we know what that means?
At first it seems pretty simple: someone has to clean the water. But if you get rid of all of our modern sanitation methods, there are still only two types of water: stagnant (dead), and moving (alive).
I’m reminded of Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at the well. Though the well was something that kept the people in that region alive, if they stopped getting water from it, it would eventually be so stagnant that you wouldn’t dare drink from it!
When we get water for ourselves, we tend to opt for a well that we can depend on, but the usefulness of well depends on our willingness to drop down our buckets to get the water.
The gospel is a spring that never runs dry. It doesn’t need us to maintain it in order for it to give life. With the gospel Jesus is the bucket and is the One that brings us life giving water out of the dust from which we came, and saves us from being doomed to remain there forever.
The world wants to convince you that stagnant water is life giving. And for a time it might keep you alive, but your God has so much more planned for you. His love shows no bounds. Out of the depths His love emerges as a light in a darkling world.
Stop trying to drop the bucket yourself. Let Him do it for you.
